Zapier: best for simple, fast wins
Zapier has the largest app directory and the gentlest learning curve. If you want “when I get a form submission, add a row and send a Slack message,” you'll have it running in minutes. The catch is per-task pricing: every step in every run counts, so costs climb quickly as volume grows, and complex branching logic is awkward. It's a great starting point and a poor place to scale.
Make: best for complex visual flows
Make (formerly Integromat) gives you a visual canvas with far more power than Zapier: branching, iterators, aggregators, and error handling, at a much lower per-operation cost. It's the sweet spot when your automation has real logic but you'd rather not manage infrastructure. n8n: best for scale, AI, and data control
n8n is open-source and can be self-hosted, which changes the economics: instead of paying per task, you run it on your own server at a flat cost, a huge difference at volume. It's the most flexible of the three (custom code nodes, full API access) and has the strongest support for AI and autonomous agents. The pricing reality nobody mentions
The headline subscription price isn't the real cost. The pricing model is. Zapier's per-task model is fine at low volume but punishes growth: a single multi-step automation running thousands of times a month can cost more than the rest of your stack. Make's per-operation model is far gentler. n8n self-hosted is effectively flat (you pay for a server, not per execution), which is why high-volume automations almost always end up there.
So which should you pick?
- Just getting started, low volume, non-technical? Zapier.
- Complex logic, want visual, watching cost? Make.
